The Carmen Suite stands as a masterpiece in the realm of global ballet. It narrates the tale of the woeful destiny of the gypsy Carmen and the infatuated soldier Jose, whom she abandons for the sake of the young Torero, despite his enduring love for her. The love triangle culminating in tragedy is certain to evoke deep emotions within you.
The essence of Prosper Mérimée’s novella, unveiled through the opera presented across four acts, seamlessly converges within the ballet adaptation. The pioneering notion of translating the opera Carmen into a ballet was championed by the ballet dancer Maya Plisetskaya. Collaborating with the Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso, she orchestrated the libretto and choreography for the Carmen Suite. Additionally, her husband, composer Rodion Shchedrin, orchestrated the musical transcription for the ballet rendition of Carmen Suite.
